Professional Background
Nearly Five Decades of Legal Experience
Mark J. Bunim, Esq. brings to every matter the perspective of someone who has spent nearly five decades inside the legal system — as a practicing attorney, as a litigator, and ultimately as one of New York's most experienced arbitrators and mediators. That breadth of experience is not incidental; it is the foundation of his effectiveness as a neutral.
Mark graduated summa cum laude from New York University in 1971 and earned his J.D. from Rutgers School of Law in 1975. He was admitted to the New York bar in 1976 and has been in continuous practice since. His legal career encompassed insurance law, commercial litigation, construction disputes, and employment matters — giving him first-hand knowledge of the pressures, strategies, and stakes that counsel and their clients bring to the table.
In 2005, Mark founded Case Closure, LLC., dedicating his practice entirely to alternative dispute resolution. Since then, he has mediated over 400 disputes and arbitrated over 150 matters as a tribunal chair and wing; and as a solo arbitrator, with particular depth in insurance coverage disputes — including bad faith claims and extra-contractual liability — and complex commercial disputes. His practice is both domestic and international in scope.
Mark is a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators and a Diplomate member of the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals, having been inducted in 2012. He was named 2013 Top Rated Lawyer in Insurance Law by the American Lawyer and the New York Law Journal. He is a published author and frequent speaker at bar association events across the country.
His approach to every matter is defined by the same four principles that have guided his career: a commitment to a schedule-adherent and efficient process; a focus on the overall practicality of the issues in dispute; careful examination of facts and law; and the application of extensive experience with all types of award processes.
Mark welcomes selection interviews via video conference for parties considering him as arbitrator or mediator.

This background provides him with rare insight into both litigation strategy and dispute resolution, particularly in complex insurance and commercial matters.
Mark’s career spans every seat at the table — as a litigator, as a partner managing complex insurance portfolios, and as a neutral resolving disputes. That breadth is rare, and it is what allows him to understand the pressures and incentives on all sides of a dispute.
Attorneys who appear before him know they are working with someone who has tried cases, negotiated settlements, and managed client relationships at the highest level — not simply a retired judge or academic neutral.
